In the hustle and bustle of modern life, it’s all too easy to lose touch with our inner world. Our emotions can become tangled, and our creativity can feel blocked. But what if we could reconnect with ourselves by gently embracing emotions through art and nature? As a creative life coach, I invite you to explore your emotions in a way that’s not about perfection, but about presence. Through simple, mindful practices, we can gently untangle the knots of your inner world.
One of the most effective tools we can use is a simple emotional check-in. All you need is six colours, including black, and some paper. You can use anything from felt-tips and colouring pencils to crayons or acrylic paints. The key is not to aim for a masterpiece, but to let your emotions flow freely.
To begin, take a moment to centre yourself. Close your eyes, take a deep breath in through your nose, hold it for a moment, and then slowly release it through your mouth. Repeat this a few times until you feel grounded and present.
Now, start with a dark colour. Let your hand move intuitively, drawing shapes and lines without any pressure or expectation. This practice is all about being present and going with the flow. There’s no need for neatness; be as messy as you like and let your emotions speak through your arm, hand, and mind.
Each colour can represent different emotions. For example, black might reflect feelings of heaviness or introspection, while brighter hues might convey joy, excitement, or calm. As you draw, notice how each colour makes you feel. This isn’t about judging your emotions but about observing them.
Let me share an example of a client I worked with, whom we’ll call Emma. Emma came to me feeling overwhelmed and creatively blocked. She was struggling to express her emotions and felt stuck in her daily routine.
In our sessions, Emma engaged in the emotional check-in practice. She started with black, letting her hand move across the paper, and soon she found herself expressing feelings she hadn’t acknowledged before. As she added more colours, a pattern emerged, and she began to understand the deeper layers of her emotions.
Through this process, Emma gained clarity and confidence. She discovered that her emotions weren’t obstacles but guides, leading her toward greater self-awareness.
As you engage in this creative process, consider these reflective questions to deepen your understanding:
These questions aren’t meant to have immediate answers. They are gentle invitations to explore your inner landscape, allowing you to gain insights at your own pace.
What makes this practice so transformative is that it brings you into the present moment. Nature, with its calming rhythms, and art, with its expressive freedom, work together to help you release tension and invite clarity.
Over time, these sessions can help you navigate emotions with greater ease and find new sources of inspiration. It’s not about changing who you are, but about understanding and embracing all that you are.
If you’re curious about exploring this practice and would like to see how it can support you, I invite you to book a free 30-minute discovery call with me. During this relaxed conversation, we can explore how this approach might be the right fit for you, with no pressure or commitment to book coaching sessions. It’s simply a space to connect and see how you might feel supported.
Thank you so much for joining me on this journey. Together, let’s embrace the healing power of art and nature.
